Robert Chausse's Work Sold at Auction

 Robert Chausse (ROC) recently comleted a sale in France during an auction which took place on Monday, May 12, 2008 at the Casino Dinard. It was the first large international auction of contemporary art to be held at the casino in Dinard, France. Robert Chausse's (ROC) artwork that was sold is "Amertume", the price of the allotment is 1.060,00 € (1.642,79 $). Francisco Oller y Cestero, La Batalla de Trevino to be on Public View for the First Time Ever

 From May 24 through 29, the most important painting to be offered at
auction by Puerto Rico’s preeminent 19th-century painter, Francisco Oller y Cestero (1833-1917), will be on view at Sotheby’s New York, alongside the exhibition for the New York sale of Latin American Art, which will take place on May 29 and 30. This newly discovered work, whose very existence was unknown until recent years, has been in the same private family collection in Spain for over 100 years. This painting has never been exhibited publicly or published and represents a major discovery and contribution to the scholarship on this outstanding artist. La Batalla de Trevino will be offered for sale at Sotheby’s London in The Spanish Sale on November 12, 2008 (est. £340,000 – 380,000*).

Finalists Announced for Garden Photographer of the Year

 After thousands of photographs were submitted to the first ever international Garden Photographer of the Year competition earlier this year, the entrants have now been whittled down to a list of talented photographers, classed either as "Finalists" or "Commended" and announced today at www.igpoty.com. The panel of eleven judges, including renowned garden photographer Clive Nichols and TV's Chris Beardshaw, deliberated at length over photographs of an incredibly high standard from as far afield as Hawaii, Japan and Australia. The Finalists‚ photographs will be showcased at a high-profile exhibition launched on 22 May, in a purpose-built outdoor area at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and running until late September 2008. The winners themselves will be announced when the show opens, as part of the opening of Kew‚s Summer festival. Read Indepth Article

Cassandra Gordon-Harris to Exhibit at Spring into Summer

 Cassandra Gordon-Harris of Rincon Studios in Edgewood, NM will be exhibiting the her artwork titled “Red Moon Road”, an oil on canvas measuring 21 inches square in the “Spring into Summer” exhibition at the National Association of Women Artists Gallery, 80 Fifth Avenue in New York. The show runs from May 22 to July 15, 2008. Approximately 125 artist selected from over 900 NAWA members will imaginatively interpret “Spring into Summer” in a variety of media. Conveniently located in the Union Square area of Manhattan, the exhibition is a national show that includes the work of women artist from across the country. Cassandra Gordon-Harris has been a Premiere Portfolio Member at absolutearts.com since 2001.
Opening Reception will be held Thursday, May 29th from 4-7 p.m. and all are welcome.

Spring turns to summer in Dubai

As the temperature goes up, Dubai winds down and the summer exodus begins. It is http://www.artdubai.ae/ a huge contrast to the frenzy of early spring when Art Dubai becomes the axis around which so much else revolves. It was March 18-22 so it already seems like a long time ago that the press releases were cut and pasted along with endless gushing about how fantastic it all was. Critical analysis has yet to find a home n Dubai!
Journalistic cynicisms aside, there were some real highlights. My personal favourite was Desperately Seeking Paradise, a group show of contemporary Pakistani art curated especially for Art Dubai's new Pakistan Pavilion. Huma Mulji?s suitcase installation addresses the lives of migrant labourers in Dubai. A suitcase of golden shoes and bread suggests the riches they seek but which they ultimately build for others. A suitcase of showers had a speaker in each shower head, one narrating dreams of employment in Dubai and the other narrating the drawbacks. Also on show were video installations of interviews projected onto cardboard boxes, disturbing clay figures laying face down in the flowerbeds and the interesting results of a photography workshop given by students of the American University of Dubai to twelve labourers.
