Indepth Arts News:

"THE OOBRs ARE HERE!"
1999-07-12 until 0000-00-00
Off-Off Broadway
New York, NY, USA United States of America

Capping the New York theatre season, the 1999 OOBR Awards, honoring excellence Off-Off-Broadway, will be held Monday, July 12th at the Union Square Theatre, at 17th St. and Union Square, at 7pm. Created to acknowledge an egregiously overlooked aspect of the theatre, the 5th Annual OOBRs ceremony will feature live entertainment by performers and theatre companies that have trodden the Off-Off-Broadway boards this past season. The ceremony will also provide a repast courtesy of Katz’s Delicatessen at the after-awards networking party.

The OOBRs are the brainchild of John Chatterton, publisher and editor of oobr (“the off-off-broadway review”), the only magazine devoted exclusively to reviewing the Off-Off-Broadway theatre season. (The publication’s Web site, at www.oobr.com, contains information on over 100 Off-Off-B’way productions currently running in New York City.) “Off-Off-Broadway is a mecca for theatre,” noted Chatterton. “If you saw a different production every night for a year, you still wouldn’t be able to see everything there is to offer. The OOBRs acknowledge these unsung and often under-appreciated performers.” Additionally, a lifetime achievement award will be given to the Split Britches theatrical troupe. Established in the early 1980s, the group has created numerous innovative works of lesbian theatre, in addition to helping establish the WOW Cafe, a performance space for women in the East Village. Entertainment for the evening will be provided by the casts of The Cover of Life (Thanks Mom! Productions), Bo (Willie Ann Gissendanner), King Lear (the Chekhov Theatre Ensemble), and Cary & Gallo in Who Is That GuyNULL (Josh Cary and Patrick Gallo). So come and join in the festivities as the staff of oobr honor the unpredictable irreverence that is Off-Off-Broadway. Admission is $18.00. Reservations should be made by calling 212-691-2014. For press information call 212-242-1648.
