Carlos Fuentes, Mexican writer, was awarded the
Latinidade Prize, presented by Mr. Jacques Chirac,
the President of France, in a cerimony held by the
Academia Brasileira de Letras (Brazilian Academy of
Literature) and the Academie Francaise (French Academy).
Many cultural and political personalities attended the cerimony.
In addition to the Academy members also present were
the Presidents of Brazil and Mexico, Messrs. Fernando
Henrique Cardoso and Ernesto Zedilho, the Honorary President
of the French Academy, Mr. Maurice Druon and other
Academy members, the former President of Brazil and Academy
Member Jose Sarney, Academy Member Eduardo Portela,
the present President of UNESCO, ambassadors and ministers
of several countries.
The sculptor Calabrone, author of the Prize trophy-symbol, was
also present.
The award cerimony of the Latinidade Prize for the year 2000 will
take place in Paris, at the headquarters of the Academie Francaise.
