"Adrienne Outlaw"
1999-07-02 until 1999-08-01
Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art
Nasvhville, TN,
USA United States of America
The exhibition, titled Temporary Contemporary: Movements
- Conceptual Art by Adrienne Outlaw, takes a retrospective
look at Outlaw's art over the past several years. The
exhibition's focus is on how the artist's day job as a radio and
print journalist influenced the evolution of her art while her
return to certain materials, such as textiles and nails, created
a common thread in her work.
Outlaw has interviewed such art-world luminaries as Robert
Rauschenberg, Frank Stella and James Turrell. With
Movements she explores how her contact with these artists
led to discoveries in her own work. A CD of Outlaw's
interviews with approximately one-dozen internationally,
nationally and regionally recognized artists will be included in
the exhibition, allowing viewers don headphones and listen
in. There will also be copies of Outlaw's reviews and reports
from the weekly Nashville paper InReview available for
visitors to thumb through.
Outlaw's high profile in the field of journalism has recently
morphed into that of an award-winning artist. In 1999, Outlaw
was awarded the Metro Nashville Arts Commission's
Creation Grant. She was also chosen as a participant in the
public art program for the upcoming Nashville Library
project. Outlaw, who received her BFA from the School of
the Art Institute of Chicago in 1993, also attended
Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism. She
has exhibited in four solo exhibitions and dozens of group
shows in the region.
