Indepth Arts News:
"New Goods and Services Tax to hit hard at Australian arts."
1999-07-20 until 1999-07-20

The Australian Federal Government will introduce a goods and services (or
value added) tax with potentially serious consequences for the visual
arts sector. Despite lengthy submissions from the industry calling for
protection in the form of zero tax ratings for artists and arts
organisations and/or compensation in the form of grants and exemptions, the
tax is to be introduced with no immediate compensation. This wait and see
approach from the government seems likely to condemn many promising
artists' careers and organisations to oblivion, before any rescue offers
might be considered.
