"Russia not to Return Looted Works to Germany"
1999-07-20 until 1999-07-20

, , USA United States of America

On Tuesday the Russian High Court ruled that Russia did not have to return looted art from Nazi Germany. The problem arose from the fact that the new law in Russia would not have distinguished between art owned by Nazi Germany or art owned by others that had been looted by the Nazis in the first place. At stake are an estimated 1 million books, 55,000 paintings, sculptures and other art works, and 175,000 coins and medals that the Soviet Union systematically removed from Nazi Germany following the war. The issue has complicated otherwise good relations between Russia and Germany in recent years.
