"Examining Pictures"
1999-07-24 until 1999-09-19
Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago
Chicago, , USA United States of America

Examining Pictures is a provocative analysis of international contemporary painting, curated by Judith Nesbitt of Londons Whitechapel Art Gallery and Francesco Bonami, newly-appointed MCA Manilow Senior Curator. This exhibition examines painting as the ultimate virtual space that, in the last four decades, has been challenged, attacked, dismissed, praised and subverted but never abandoned or forgotten. Saturated by mass communication and electronic media, people still cross the threshold of museums and galleries seeking the unique relationship that is established in front of a painting.

With one painting by each of more than 50 artists, the exhibition recognizes the current resurgence of interest in painting, and this generations relationship to painting in relation to earlier generations of artists from the 60s, 70s and 80s. The exhibition is installed not as a chronological sequence, but as a series of abutting visions, presenting the viewer with a maze of memories, concepts, stories and flashbacks on the subject of painting.
