"Siegmar Polke: Works on Paper 1963-1974"
1999-07-16 until 1999-10-17
Hamburger Kunsthalle
Hamburg, , DE Germany

The recent comprehensive retrospective in the Bundeskunsthalle Bonn and the Nationalgalerie Berlin firmly established Sigmar Polke’s reputation as one of the leading artists of the present day.

Alongside his paintings, Polke has been creating a graphic œuvre of considerable dimensions and particular significance since the early 1960s. These drawings have an individual character, accompanying the paintings with their tremendous wealth of pictorial and creative ideas. Organized in collaboration with the Museum of Modern Art in New York, this exhibition in the Hamburg Kunsthalle will be the only European showing of an extensive survey of Polke’s drawings, from the small format works of the 1960s to the picture-sized works of the 1970s, plus a number of previously unknown sketchbooks. The exhibition will be accompagnied by an approx. 250 page catalogue with illustrations of almost all the exhibits. The exhibition itself will contain around 200 drawings in various techniques from major European and American collections.
