1999-07-15 until 1999-08-21
ABSOLUT
Los Angeles, CA, USA United States of America

This summer the Absolut-L.A. International brings a vast array of worlds best contemporary art work to Los Angeles. In its fourth biennial, The Absolut-L.A. International has developed a unique format whereby some 60 of L.A.s best contemporary galleries offer their gallery spaces to over 200 international artists from 30 countries for a six-week exhibition, July 15 through August 21, 1999.

This year the Absolut-L.A. International will also be the first featured event of ARTS/LA, the City of Los Angeles two-year Millennium celebration, an exciting two year program that unveils a number of innovative programs designed to highlight LAs art andculture and increase their accessibility. The Absolut-L.A. International is a citywide nonprofit event conceived to foster a dialogue between the Los Angeles art community and artists, galleries, curators, museums, collectors and visitors from around the world. Since its inception in 1993, the Absolut-L.A. International has grown in breadth and quality of participation, sponsorship and recognition, with principal backing from Absolut Vodka and the Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department, who have been joined this year by the most impressive roster of sponsors to date. The biennal commences with the opening gallery receptions around the city. On July 15, from 6-10PM, exhibition openings will be held for the West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, La Brea Avenue, Beverly Boulevard, Melrose Avenue, and Wilshire galleries. On July 16, 6-10 PM, openings are at the Santa Monica Main Street, Colorado Avenue, Broadway Gallery Complex, 18th Street Arts Complex, and Venice galleries. On July 17, the Downtown Los Angeles galleries will have their openings from 12-4PM and the Bergamot Station galleries will hold their openings from 4-8 PM. In addition to the wealth of international art being exhibited in the galleries and arts institutions, panel discussions, lectures, and special events are scheduled to be held at The Getty Center, the Los Angeles County Museum, the UCLA Hammer Museum of Art, MOCA, The Santa Monica Museum, Cal State Long Beach Museum, 18th Street Arts Complex, Barnsdall Art Park, The MAK Center for Art and Architecture, The Skirball Museum, and the Italian Cultural Institute. The web site, www.LAin99.org will feature an interactive catalog and virtual exhibitions, an overview of events, and a guide to transportation throughout the Absolut-L.A. International and the Los Angeles Millennium Celebration. To see the exhibitions the old-fashioned, non-virtual way, there will be a catalog, and an ìArt Busî with guided tours of exhibitions throughout the city. To accommodate the influx of visitors this year, the organizers have worked out special hotel and travel arrangements. For Information on these special rates, contact Tracy at Santa Monica Travel, at 800-826-8823. For more information on the Absolut-L.A.
