"Art Now"
1999-08-03 until 1999-10-15
Tate Gallery
London, , UK United Kingdom

The Art Now programme comprises at least four contemporary art exhibitions each year. These exhibitions feature recent work by new and established artists, from England and abroad. Art Now 19 (3 August-October) presents work by Simon Callery who was born in London in 1960 and studied at Berkshire College of Art and Design and Cardiff College of Art. During the early 1990s he produced a body of paintings that suggested remembered fragments of the fabric and texture of the city. Always pale and delicate in colour, these paintings seemed concerned with light, atmosphere and weather. His more recent paintings still have a luminous quality, but structured by vertical or horizontal lines they also have a sculptural presence. Callery works close to the canvas, applying paint which he then scrapes away with a scalpel. Pared down, his canvases have the look of weathered stone.
