"Elizabeth Catlett Sculpture: A 50 Year Retrospective"
1999-05-08 until 1999-08-15
California African American Museum
Los Angeles, CA,
USA United States of America
The California African American Museum offers the only West Coast exhibition of
Elizabeth Catlett Sculpture: A 50 Year Retrospective. Catlett, one of this century’s
finest sculptors, believes that art should be of service to people, and should portray
societal, political and economic injustice. In particular, she sees her art as a catalyst
for change and important only to the extent that it helps liberate her people. Through
the exhibition, featuring Catlett’s 52 sculptures, she asserts progressive politics, an
African American female perspective and the manifestation of her own cross cultural
identity. Elizabeth Catlett’s work over the last five decades in both the United States
and Mexico has set artistic precedents on the ability to fuse both form and shape with
aesthetic conviction.
Elizabeth Catlett’s Sculpture: A 50 Year Retrospective is presented in English and
Spanish.
