How hard do you fight for homeNULL In the case of the diverse group in the
World Premiere of Tim Marks PEARLDIVERS - produced by Hand Rubbed
Productions and playing at the American Theatre of Actors (ATA), the answer
is different for each individual.
Set in Londons East End in the not-too-distant past, a squalid squat is the
home of Ally - an Irish Sociopath; The Prof - an English book thief whos
unhappy with his sexuality; and Terry and Ronny - lifelong friends who
crossed over from Ireland together and who are content to make a living as
Pearldivers (Casual Dishwashers). The group lives hard, but not without
humor and affection. However things change when Spiv, a sometimes hustler
and full-time screw-up recently arrived from Dublin, moves in. Almost
immediately, Spivs actions threaten the already tenuous security of the
squat. And with enemies as varied as the power company, the police and the
TV license enforcement bureau, the lads do not need any more problems. When
the inevitable happens and friendships and their home are threatened, each
member of the household must decide for themselves just what the real meaning
of Home is. A notion that is clearer for some then for others.
PEARLDIVERS is the second part of a Tricolour Travellers Trilogy, examining
the myth of the home as seen through the eyes of the Irish. Connected by the
Celtic Strand, the trilogy examines what the modern Celtic Nation takes and
what they leave behind when they travel abroad. Part one of this series,
Locating The Plant, was produced by the ATA in February 1996.
After six staged readings, This marks the first fully staged production of
PEARLDIVERS, directed with compassion and humor by David Hayden and with a
cast that includes Tom Delahanty, Calvin Gladen, Sean Heeny, Kevin Lee,
Michael Worth and Richard Lester (an ex-professional soccer player for the
New York Cosmos).
Hand Rubbed Productions was formed by Catherine Pries in 1999. Her goal is
to produce worthwhile plays by playwrights who want to avoid the pitfalls of
community theatre productions. This is Catherines debut production.
PEARLDIVERS plays at the American Theatre of Actors, located at 314 West 54th
