"Last Chance! Ancient Gold: The Wealth of the Thracians"
1999-07-27 until 1999-08-29
Detroit Institute of Art
Detroit, MI, USA United States of America

This exhibition closes at the Detroit Institute of Arts on August 29 after a seven city US tour. This exhibition contains over 200 gold and silver objects gathered from the museums of Bulgaria representing the little known cultures of ancient Thrace. Spectacular objects from royal tombs and hidden troves exemplify the wealth and power of a people who left no written records but were extolled by ancient authors from Homer to Herodotus as fierce, war-like and especially fond of rich display. Many of the objects come from recent excavations and have never been seen outside Bulgaria before this tour. After the exhibition closes in Detroit the objects return to Bulgaria to be dispersed to their home museums. This is a rare opportunity to experience a most unusual offering.
