There’s a man signing out a book right now. I’m going to follow him. Put the book back to where you found it. Let’s go. You are in the Whitechapel Library. You’ve been told to go to the crime section. You hear footsteps. Voices fill your head. Part urban guide, part fiction, part film noir, Janet Cardiff’s audio walk entwines you in a narrative that shifts through time and space. Intimate, even conspirational, Cardiff has created, a psychologically absorbing experience - for an audience of one at a time.

At the Library, they give you a Discman. You leave the building and find yourself transported back in time. What was that soundNULL Who is speaking to youNULL Where does reality end, and where does what’s imagined begin...NULL For her British debut, Janet Cardiff has made an extraordinary soundtrack for London’s inner city. The work lasts some 45 minutes, tracing a route through Spitalfields and towards the City of London. The threads of The Missing Voice (Case Study B) are brought to some kind of resolution in a quiet place off Commercial Street.

Have you ever had the urge to disappear, to take off for somewhere and not tell anyone, Escape from your own life...

Over the past few years, Janet Cardiff has built a growing international reputation. Now based in Lethbridge in Canada, she has developed a highly distinctive body of site-specific work comprising walks, sound-pieces and installations. The Missing Voice (Case Study B) has been developed in London over the past two years, and is Janet Cardiff’s most ambitious work to date.
