"Arts Center selects juror for exhibition"

Newport News, VA - The Peninsula Fine Arts Center is pleased to announce that Kinshasha Holman Conwill will serve as juror for Juried Exhibition 1999 at the Peninsula Fine Arts Center, August 28 - November 7, 1999. Ms. Conwill selected, by slides, 99 works by 45 artists from 907 entries in all media by 317 artists. Entries were received from 26 states, Washington, D.C., the Virgin Islands, and Canada.

Ms. Conwill will discuss and show slides of the selections she made on Saturday, August 21 at 5:30 p.m. at the John Gaines Theatre on the campus of Christopher Newport University. She will also speak about the visual arts and how they can be utilized to help strengthen communities. A brief question and answer period will follow. Light refreshments, sponsored in part by the Newport News Chapter of The Links, Inc., will be served.

At the exhibition's public reception, 5:30 p.m. Saturday, August 28, more than $7,000 in cash prizes will be awarded to artists based on the juror's recommendations. The most coveted award is a one-person exhibition at the Center in the next year.

Ms. Conwill is the Director of The Studio Museum in Harlem, and has been with the Museum since 1980. Previously, she was the Assistant Exhibit Coordinator for the Museum of the American Indian in New York City, and Activities Coordinator for the Frank Lloyd Wright Hollyhock House in Los Angeles. She is a practicing visual and performance artist, and also serves on numerous Boards throughout the country, including the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, New Visions, and the Municipal Art Society of New York.
