Organized by the Trust for Museum Exhibitions in Washington, D.C. and guest curated by Dr. Dennis Farr, former Director of The Courtauld Institute Galleries, London, this retrospective constitutes the first major comprehensive exhibition of Francis Bacons work in the United States since the artists death in 1992. British painter Francis Bacon defies neat categorization, both as a man and as an artist. Throughout his life Bacon perceived himself as, and propagated the image of, an outsider. Unlike previous retrospectives, this exhibition offers an in-depth view of the development of Bacons imagery and of his growth as an artist and human being. Francis Bacon: A Retrospective Exhibition examines the increasing popularity of this self-taught artists works, from the early post-cubist pieces, through the crucifixion, papal and portraiture series of his later years. Approximately fifty significant paintings from collections in Europe and the United States are showcased in this special exhibition. Seen within the context of this chronological scholarly exhibition, the importance and impact of Bacon on modern art is clarified and more fully explored than it has been in the past thirty years. This exhibition is supported by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities.
