>Sherman’s work has made an important contribution to the rise of
photography and mass-media techniques and imagery within contemporary
art. Beginning with her Untitled Film Stills and continuing through her
Centerfolds, Fashion, Disaster, Fairy Tales and History Portraits, Sherman
explores constructions of female identity through staged and manipulated
photographs. In more recent series, such as Civil War and Sex Pictures,
Sherman has used grotesque imagery that functions as an ambiguous
social commentary.
