"Willi Baumeister and the Universal in Art"
1999-08-28 until 1999-10-31
Cobra Museum for Modern Art
Amstelveen, , NL Netherlands

The exhibition consists of abstract work by Willi Baumeister (1889-1955) and of several other artists who considered that abstract art has a universal character. The focus is on the book ‘Das Unbekannte in der Kunst’ [The Unknown in Art] by Willi Baumeister and the abstract art of the Fifties. For Baumeister, the ‘Unbekannte’ was the universal aspect that he found in objects and in many different cultures.
