"Joe Coleman/MATRIX 139"
1999-08-29 until 1999-11-14
Wadsworth Atheneum
Hartford, CT, USA United States of America

Despite his two decades as an artist, Joe Coleman's visionary work has not been shown in a mainstream museum until now. Coleman's exhilarating and unnerving paintings are crammed with obsessive detail, textual quotations, and patterns that fuse the decorative and the grotesque, and draw from both Old Master traditions and popular culture. This exhibition focuses on recent portraits-chiefly of criminals, the insane, public figures, and artists-in which identity is depicted as an accumulation of experiences, creating a non-linear narrative evoking the fragmented self. Also included is a selection from The Odditorium, Coleman's own museum of the bizarre.
