The Sculptors Guild: A Group Exhibition This exhibition comprises nearly sixty
sculptures in a variety of media, techniques, and creative approaches by forty-four
members of the Guild. The works, representing a cross section of current styles and
movements, were selected from slides submitted to Grounds For Sculpture by many
of the Guild artists. Arrangements for the exhibition were made earlier this year
between Brooke Barrie, director and curator of Grounds For Sculpture, and Stephen
Keltner, president of The Sculptors Guild.
Sculptures by the following contemporary artists are on view: David Boyajian,
Leonard Cave, Ann Chahbandour, Joan Danziger, David E. Davis, Fritz Dietel, Jo o
Duarte, Nick Edmonds, Lin Emery, Joseph Fucigna, Don Gale, Irene Gennaro, Lucy
Hodgson, Greg Johns, Ann Jon, Howard Kalish, Penny Kaplan, Stephen Keltner,
Barbara Lekberg, James J. Lloyd, Michael Malpass, Molly Mason, Brian
McCutcheon, Betty McGeehan, Ron Mehlman, Richard McDermott Miller, Robert
H. Motes, Mary Nicholas, Jene Nickford, Juan Nickford, Arnold Prince, Wendy M.
Ross, Vera Schupack, Renata Manasse Schwebel, Alvin Sher, David Smalley, Robert
Michael Smith, Judith Steinberg, Immi Storrs, Hans Van de Bovenkamp, Sharon
Wandel, Claudia Widdiss, and Jean Woodham. As a special tribute, works by
former members Chaim Gross (1904-1991) and Michael Malpass (1946-1991) are
included in the exhibition.
The Sculptors Guild, a non-profit organization of professional artists, was founded
in 1937 by William Zorach to promote sculpture as an art form and provide free
exhibition venues to its members. In addition to numerous shows in New York City,
the Guild has organized exhibitions at colleges and galleries in Pittsburgh;
Philadelphia; San Francisco; Santa Fe; Washington, D.C.; and many other cities in
the United States. The Guild also keeps an extensive registry of slides and
biographical materials on the members. These files are available to curators,
collectors, architects, and others interested in learning more about the work of the
artists. Membership in The Sculptors Guild is based on creative ability, and
professional standing, and is offered by invitation only. Applications are reviewed
annually and there is no residency requirement. Presently, the Guilds office and
exhibition space are located in New York City at The Soho Building, 110 Greene
Street.
