"Nilima Sheikh: Painted Drawings"
1999-08-26 until 1999-09-16
Gallery Espace
New Delhi, , IN India

The new work of Nilima Sheikh at Gallery Espace (26th of August' 99 to 16th September'99) includes small format tempera pictures, larger works on laminated Nepali and Sanganeri paper, and large 7 foot scroll. She has, while using traditional methods, presented both contemporary experience as well as older texts, some reinterpreted in the present context. Her visual reading of the spiritual experiences of the great female bhakti saint Mahadevi Akka of the south stand side by side with her experiences while travelling, and with her responses to the Buddhist Jataka Katha and she combines common traditions from sources as diverse - and as similar- as India, China and Italy for example. In the process of questioning certain central facets of modernism, Nilima Sheikh has evolved a unique style which places her among the foremost artists working with a new Indian aesthetic.
