Indepth Arts News:
"post-hypnotic"
1999-09-04 until 1999-10-31
Contemporary Art Center
Cincinnati, OH,
USA United States of America
Pulsating patterns, glowing afterimages,
vibrating visions ... it's enough to send a
person's head spinning. Since the Op Art
movement peaked in the mid-1960s,
numerous artists have revisited visual
phenomena that create sensations often
associated with altered mind states.
post-hypnotic examines the recent
re-evaluation of optical effects in the work
of 28 painters from the United States,
Switzerland, England and Japan. The 50
paintings in the exhibition show the
precision of the artists while pushing the
blurry limits of human sight, sometimes
creating a heady sense of vertigo. Artists
exhibited in post-hypnotic will include John Armleder, Peter Halley, Judy
Ledgerwood, Phillip Taaffe and Fred Tomaselli.
post-hypnotic is organized by University Galleries of
Illinois State University and is supported in part by grants
from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Illinois
Arts Council. A full-color catalog with essays by Tom
Moody and Barry Blinderman is available.
