For over 200 years, Americans have venerated George Washington as first in war, first in
peace, first in the hearts of his citizens. 1999 marks the bicentennial of Washington's
death (December 14, 1799), and a time to recognize the Nation's Father for his impact
on American culture. This exhibition includes textiles, glassware, ceramics, prints and
paintings from the Wadsworth Atheneum's collections that tell the story of Washington as
a revered American man and myth.
