he work of Sandra Kriel is unconventional. As a producer of fine arts she makes use of unusual mixed media. She utilises textile on which, for example, embroidery, beads, buttons, photostats and photographs are attached with the purpose of bringing about effective visual and visionary communication. This, the artist's first solo exhibition, comprises all 14 of her works produced in these very time-consuming media.

Sandra Kriel's work has been shown since 1991, at group exhibitions in South Africa, Europe and America. She was the recipient of the main award at the 1991 Cape Town Triennial. In 1993, when after 20 years, South Africa was invited back to the Venice Biennale, Kriel and Jackson Hlungwani were the two principal artists picked to represent South Africa.

The artist was born in Cape Town and now lives and works in Barrydale. During 1980-92 she was involved in art education in Stellenbosch after her studies at the University here and in Antwerp (Belgium). She completed the M.A. Art (Educationes) in 1983 at the
