"Highlights from the Dahesh Museum Collection"
1999-09-14 until 1999-12-31
The Dahesh Museum
New York, NY, USA United States of America

Paul Delaroche’s Pietà, while reacquainting visitors with old favorites like Adolphe-William Bouguereau’s The Water Girl. >The very best of what this unique institution has to offer is on view this fall when a group of 35 paintings, sculptures and prints are assembled to underscore important themes in 19th-century academic art and the contexts that shaped them. Drawn entirely from the Museum’s own collection, the exhibition introduces its newest acquisitions, including the masterwork by German Orientalist Gustav Bauernfeind, In the Harbor of Jaffa, a fascinating early Jean-Léon Gérôme painting entitled Michaelangelo in His Studio, and Paul Delaroche’s Pietà, while reacquainting visitors with old favorites like Adolphe-William Bouguereau’s The Water Girl.

These works, along with several others by Charles-Henri-Joseph Cordier, Jules-Jean-Antoine Lecomte de Nouy, Jean-Baptiste Vanmour, and Sir John Gilbert serve as focal points for the exhibition. The biblical and mythological subjects favored by history painters as well as the genre scenes and Orientalist fantasies that dominated the Paris Salon are critically examined. Juxtaposing recent acquisitions with works from the founding collection, Highlights from the Dahesh Museum Collection demonstrates how art works ‘speak’ to each other -- recalling or reformulating issues across time, space and media. In addition, since many of the works on view have recently been added to the permanent collection, the exhibition invites the viewer to consider how an academic art collection is built. A full-color catalogue with an historical essay and entries on 70 works from the Dahesh Collection will accompany the exhibition. The Dahesh Museum is located at 601 Fifth Avenue at 48th Street. Admission is always free and children are welcome. Hours are 11-6, Tuesday through Saturday, closed Sunday, Monday and all legal holidays. Admission is free and the Museum is wheelchair accessible.
