"About Face: Andy Warhol Portraits"
1999-09-24 until 2000-01-13
Wadsworth Artheneum
Hartford, CT,

Andy Warhol (1928-1987) was fascinated by the face. His iconic 1960s paintings of
Marilyn, Liz, Jackie, and other celebrities brought the time-honored tradition of portraiture
back into focus as a subject for postwar art. This exhibition reveals how Warhols interest
in the portrait-and the associated cult of celebrity-was constant throughout his career from
the 1950s to the 1980s. The artist not only created works on canvas and paper-he
harnessed the mass media publicity machine to create a factory of glamour, beauty and
fame. He achieved this through his innovative films, his celebrity profile magazine,
Interview, and his cable series Andy Warhols TV. A selection of Warhols unforgettable
self-portraits are also represented, including his self-portrait wallpaper.
