Indepth Arts News:
"Robin Philipson"
1999-09-25 until 1999-11-14
Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art
Edinburgh, ,
UK United Kingdom
Continuing the Gallery of Modern Art’s series of exhibitions on prominent
figures of the Edinburgh School, this is the first retrospective devoted to
Philipson’s work since the artist’s death in 1992. Robin Philipson first
came to attention in the 1950s with his highly expressive paintings of
cockfights (witnessed while serving in Burma during the Second World
War).
He continued to work in series, producing groups of paintings dealing with
a diverse range of subjects (the First World War, cathedral interiors, the
crucifixion), but all made with the same excited energy and technical
ability. This exhibition features approximately sixty works from
throughout his career, and is accompanied by an illustrated catalogue in
the Gallery’s Edinburgh School series.
