"PRINT EXCHANGE 1998-1999: PORTFOLIO FOR PLAYING CARDS"
1999-09-02 until 1999-10-17
Sasol Art Museum
Stellenbosch, , ZA South Africa

The exhibition is the result of a co-operative project between 28 South African and 26 Flemish artists. They joined together to create a limited edition portfolio of 54 original prints. An artistic pack of playing cards was produced, simultaneously. Each artist created an image for one of the cards in the pack. Despite the varied printing media, techniques and themes, these works of art, and the design on the back of the pack, have managed to form a complete and unique set of playing cards. A limited amount of packs of cards will be offered for sale at this, the first exhibition of the project in South Africa. The Print Exchange project is supported by the Frans Masereel Centre for Graphic Arts in Kasterlee (Belgium), an institute of the Ministery of the Flemish Community (Plastic Arts and Museums), as well as the workshops of Artist Proof Studio (Johannesburg) and Hard Ground Printmakers (Cape Town).

South African artists, for example Lien Botha, Pieter van der Westhuizen, Robert Siwangaza, Nhlanhla Xaba, Lyn Smuts, Billy Mandindi, Jacob Motsoane, Carol Hofmeyer, Titia Ballot and Sophie Peters, and Flemish printers, for example An Blockx, Veerle Rooms, Fred Bervoets, Nico Lannoo, Angela Melsen, Wout Vercammen and Dirk Vander Eecken will be participating in this exhibition. The presentation of the exhibition is the University Museum's contibution to the celebration of Heritage Day on 24 September.

The project will also be shown at the Pretoria Art Museum, the Gencor Gallery of the Rand Afrikaans University in Johannesburg and possibly at the Klein Karoo National Arts Festival in Oudtshoorn early next year.
