"ORCHIDS IN GOLD BY MICKEY NAX"
1999-10-30 until 1999-11-14
Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens
San Marino, CA, USA United States of America

Orchids are without doubt among the crown jewels of the plant kingdom. Prized for their rarity and admired for their beauty, they fascinate us like bright, botanical gems. The late artist Mickey Nax captured that glittering brilliance with her exquisitely crafted orchids cast in solid gold. Employing a process similar to the lost wax method used in metal sculpting, she created exquisite gold replicas that mimicked nature down to the finest details. A collection of nearly 500 of these distinctive art works has been donated to the Huntington, and selected pieces will be on exhibit through November 14, 1999. In the future, these timeless blooms will continue to captivate orchid lovers as a permanent exhibition in the Huntington’s new botanical research and education complex, which is currently under construction.
