"Herb Ritts: Work"
1999-11-05 until 2000-01-28
Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art
Kansas City, MO,
USA United States of America
This first full-scale retrospective exhibition of the work of one of our greatest fashion
photographers features over two hundred photographs-many celebrity portraits and images
of the highly idealized human body. As a photographer of fashion and celebrity, Ritts has
created memorable magazine covers and spreads, as well as album covers, movie
advertisements, music videos, and commercials. In the past decade, he has also presented his
work in galleries and in books that bring together photographs around a particular theme.
Ritts's images of the nude - of models, of athletes and bodybuilders, of Maasai women in
Africa - celebrate the human body as strong, sensuous, and beautiful. His portraits of
famous figures, from Madonna to Dizzy Gillespie, often have a whimsical quality, creating
the sense of an intimate encounter with a larger-than-life personality. Based in Los Angeles,
Herb Ritts is very much an image maker for our time, a photographer whose assured eye
and fertile imagination translate our culture's dreams and desires into strong, memorable
pictures. This exhibition was organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
