Institute of Modern Art
Brisbane, , AU Australia

In My Father's House / Postcards from Mummy Memory can be fragile, is permeable, prone to corruption and even erasure. (Hetti Perkins, Strange Fruit, 1996). Since 1991, Indigenous artists Brenda L. Croft and Destiny Deacon have exhibited their work alongside one another in various exhibitions, strengthening a friendship which stems from early days in indigenous affairs, government and community organisations.

Since 1991, Indigenous artists Brenda L. Croft and Destiny Deacon have exhibited their work alongside one another in various exhibitions, strengthening a friendship which stems from early days in indigenous affairs, government and community organisations.

In past works, both have explored the complex issues connected with being Blak and living in the city. Like Mabo. Like Native Title. Like the Stolen Generation. Like life for Indigenous people living in this country right now.

The work of Croft and Deacon is universal, encompassing issues of death, loss, grief, pain, invisibility and remembrance. The Australian Centre for Photography has brought these two artists together once again to present their most recent works, In My Father's House and Postcards from Mummy. These most recent bodies of work are intensely personal for both artists, exploring the loss of close family members. A father, a mother and a brother.

Respect - Our Grandmothers and Grandfathers

Respect is an exhibition which acknowledges the significant role that respect plays within the lives of Indigenous Australians. Respect for ourselves and in particular for our elders is linked to our beliefs, is intertwined with our cultural backgrounds and determines the way we feel about our lives.

The nine artists selected for this exhibition have all enjoyed close relationships with their grandparents. They have created works that explore and celebrate the nature of reverence, pride and respect for ones elders - and consequently ones culture.

Curator Samantha Meeks (IMA's emerging curator for 1999) has brought together artists Andrew Williams, Colleen Wall, Charmaine Wharton-Wall, Joyce Watson, Janice Peacock, Laurie Nilsen, Margrett Armstrong, Arone Raymond Meeks and Cheryl Moggs to pay tribute to this special bond.

ALL 3 EXHIBITIONS WILL BE OFFICIALLY OPENED BY MICHAEL EATHER AND BRISBANE ELDER BOB ANDERSON FROM 6PM. ALL WELCOME
