"A Painting in Focus: Nicolas Poussin s Holy Family on the Steps"

Nicolas Poussins Holy Family on the Steps (1648) is considered a masterpiece of
17th-century art and the pinnacle of the artists refined classical style. The painting of this
subject in the Cleveland collection was purchased in 1981. X-radiographs, published in 1982,
proved that it was the original of two versions, the other in the National Gallery of Art,
Washington. Until then, the Washington picture was thought by some art historians to be the
original. This exhibition will bring these two paintings together, along with x-radiographs of
both pictures. The show will also include preparatory drawings that illustrate Poussins initial
ideas for the painting and changes he made to the composition, along with prints and other
paintings that relate to this important work.
