Indepth Arts News: "Mediating Site/Mediated Vision" 1999-12-04 until 2000-01-16 California Museum of Photography Riverside, CA, USA United States of America
While we think of the photograph as being a transparent window on the world, on reality each photographic image takes on the particular character of the technology and the optics of the camera on which it is made. It is this LOOK of different technologies and differnet cameras which instantly allows us to place a photographic image in the context of history and to recognize it as deriving from various technologies such as 19th century lenses, television, video, home movies and low-grade surveillance.
Mediating Site/Mediated Vision looks at various ways in which photographic work makes the mediation of technology apparent and brings the viewer's attention back to the apparatus itself. The exhibition is curated by Kate Palmer, a second year graduate student at UCR and a History of Art Graduate Fellow in Photography.
