"Will Barnet and Bob Blackburn: An Artistic Friendship in Relief"
1999-11-27 until 2000-01-09
Georgia Museum of Art
Athens, GA, USA United States of America

Wesley and Missy Cochran, two contemporary print collectors from LaGrange, Georgia, and Patricia Phagan, curator of prints and drawings at the Georgia Museum of Art, have organized this exhibition of 51 lithographs, woodcuts, etchings and screenprints drawn from the Cochrans collection.

The two printmakers met first as teacher and student, the older Barnet having been instrumental in obtaining a scholarship for Blackburn to the Art Students League in the 1930s. Barnets simple, uncluttered, classical aesthetic at first seems opposed to Blackburns improvisational, abstract works, yet both emphasize the two-dimensional nature of their medium, and one can trace the progression of their careers through the variety of styles both have adopted and then discarded.
