Rie Muņoz (b. 1921) is well known through her
colorful images of Alaskan life. Muņoz's
playful, bright images of fishing camps, Eskimo
villages, animals, and children at play have
captured the spirit of Alaska. An adventurer at
heart, Muņoz has traveled to the farthest
reaches of the state by ferry, mail boat,
automobile, bush plane, river barge, fishing
boat, and even by umiak (a walrus skin
covered boat.)
Born in Los Angeles, Muņoz began painting
scenes of Alaskan native life in the 1950s when
she first arrived in Juneau. During a varied
career, Muņoz created murals for the University
of Alaska and the Alaska State Library, wrote
and illustrated a number of children's books,
and was Curator of Exhibits for the Alaska
State Museum. This exhibition is her eighth at
the Frye.
