National Endowment for the Humanities

In November, the National Council approved 259 grants totaling $17.2 million in the first round of NEH grants for fiscal year 2000. The list includes challenge grants to 26 cultural institutions to build long-term stability for their humanities programs, fellowship awards to 172 scholars for research on topics in the humanities, and 27 consultation grants to help develop new public programs on PBS, NPR, and in museums. Two state humanities councils-in Maine and West Virginiaæreceived challenge grants this round.
