Indepth Arts News: "Jazz Age Java" 0000-00-00 until 0000-00-00 Stowitts Museum & Library Pacific Grove, CA, USA United States of America
The Stowitts Museum & Library in Pacific Grove, California is proud to announce a new exhibition in the Ruth St. Denis Gallery entitled Jazz Age Java featuring paintings, drawings and sculpture celebrating the Royal Theatre Arts of Indonesia in the late 1920s. Featured paintings include a performance portrait of Randen Mas Suryoatmodjo, the Prime Minister at the Court of the Paku Alam of Djokja, depicted in the role of the wicked King Ravan, the abductor of the wife of Rma from the Ramayan epic by Stowitts in 1928.
Executed in the various courts of Java in egg tempera on canvas other works include Pantjok and Doyo, buffoon deities and servants of the hero Panji and a portrait of Raden Pramato depicted as Hanuman, the monkey warrior hero of the Ramayana.
