This winter, come celebrate the beauties of modern life at
the turn of the 19th century with the spectacular works of
French painter James Tissot (1836-1902). Québec City is
the only Canadian city to host this magnificent
retrospective featuring no less than 40 canvases, 27 prints
and 20 watercolours and gouaches taken from major
private and institutional collections, including those of the
Musée dOrsay in Paris and Tate Gallery in London.
James Tissot is undeniably one of the late 19th centurys
most talented artists, who has been enthusiastically
rediscovered by European and American art-lovers
beginning in the late 1960s. The artist enjoyed a brilliant
career, both in Paris and London, where he was a
privileged observer of well-to-do middle-class city life. His
works are remarkable from many viewpoints: their rich
colours, detailed execution and breathtaking realism.
Organized by The American Federation of Arts and the
Yale Center for British Art, the exhibition has received
funding from the Federal Council of the Arts and the
Humanities and is sponsored by the Benefactors Circle of
the AFA.
Presentation of the Tissot. Victorian Life/Modern Love
exhibition in Québec City has been made possible by
grants from the Fonds de diversification de léconomie de
la capitale and the Commission de la capitale nationale du
Québec.
