"LOOKING FORWARD LOOKING BLACK"
1999-12-17 until 2000-02-27
Scotsdale Museum of Contemporary Art
Scotsdale, Az, USA United States of America

Looking Forward Looking Black examines the manner in which African-Americans as a race have been represented in our culture. The Black body has been depicted in paintings, films, photography*even on cookie jars and lawn ornaments*in a manner in which it has been rendered almost invisible.

As we enter the new millennium the natural tendency to reflect upon the past, and to think in historical terms, helps determine the way in which we move into the future. Looking Forward, Looking Black gives the viewer an opportunity to participate in that urgent and important process. Among those artists whose works are included in the exhibition are Emma Amos, Michael Ray Charles, Robert Colescott, Rene Cox, Lesley Dill, Leon Golub, Lyle Ashton Harris, Glenn Ligon, Beverly McIver, Alison Sarr, Bill Traylor, Kara Walker, Maria Howard Weeden, Carrie Mae Weems and Peter Williams. Organized and curated by Jo Anna Isaak, independent curator
