"Prague 1900: Poetry & Ecstasy, Paintings, drawings, sculptures, photographs, decorative arts"
1999-12-17 until 2000-03-15
Van Gogh Museum
Amsterdam, , NL Netherlands

After the successful exhibition Glasgow 1900: art & design (1992-93) and Vienna 1900: portrait & interior (1998), for the first time in the Netherlands there will be an opportunity to see a retrospective of the art in Prague around the turn of the century

Around 1900 there was a development in the art of Prague towards an original decorative style which was influenced both by the Parisian Art Nouveau and the Viennese Sezession movements. The symbolists originally dominated the fine arts. Their sensual paintings and sculptures divulge inner feelings and are often based on themes from poetry. The crafts of the period, including the famous Bohemian glass, show how exuberant, flowery motifs slowly changed to become geometric, almost abstract patterns.

This large exhibition on Prague 1900 deals with all facets of art from that period: from paintings to jewellery, from book illustrations to sculpture, and from photography to interior architecture.
