"Within the Pale: Jewish Tombstones in the Ukraine and
Moldova Photographed by David Goberman"

This exhibition will include 70 photographs by David Goberman taken
over the course of seventy-five years. Through these photographs, the exhibition
documents and explores the vanishing art of stone carvers dating back to the
twelfth century, and highlights themes of folk art and spiritual belief. The
photos also provide a timeless record of Jewish tradition in Russia over the
course of more than three centuries. Following their photographic documentation,
many of the tombstones were later destroyed and used as construction materials.
The exhibition will include a map w ith lists of villages and names of the
deceased for use by scholars and descendants of the deceased.
