"Salvador Dali's Optical Illusions"
2000-01-21 until 2000-03-26
Wadsworth Atheneum
Hartford, CT,
USA United States of America
It was at the Wadsworth Atheneum in 1934 that Salvador Dali first uttered his famous
motto, The only difference between me and a madman is that I am not mad. The
Wadsworth was the first museum to purchase a painting by Dali, and was the first to
present an exhibition of Surrealist art. In tribute to this legacy, the museum presents a
major survey of Dali's trompe l'oeil (illusionistic) work. Dali's double and triple images
layered meaning upon mystery in some of the most imaginative, provocative and
dreamlike pictures of his career.
