"Words of Art"
2000-01-17 until 2000-02-28
BANG the gallery
Capetown, , ZA South Africa

An exhibition of poetry by Douglas Wilson as interpreted by 9 Cape Town artists. Participating artists are Alex Hamilton, Shany van den Berg, Karen Jay, Leigh-Ann Matthews, Veronika De Greeff-Gabrielse, Johan Angus, Jane Eastwood, Peter Muller and Lilly Turner. Wilson has staged two independent productions over the past two years. They have been shows where the poet has used elements of performance art and drama to convey his poetry in a more visual and accessible manner.

His first show, Indirect Confessions, was staged at The Coffee Lounge in early 1998 and he was then granted a sponsorship to perform the same show at the Grahamstown Arts Festival the same year. Indirect Confessions was voted one of the top ten shows of 1998, by the Argus Tonight.

Discreet Expressions was put on at the New Brunswick Theatre in February 1999 - incorporating slides and sets as effective mediums - fusing visuals, sound and performance enhancing the descriptive poetry.

WORDS OF ART, Wilson s latest and most unique project sees him collaborating with Alex Hamilton of BANG THE GALLERY and 8 other artists. The concept is new and exciting, where the artists interpreted Wilson s poetry in their various mediums, which include painting and  photography.

Exhibition opens on Monday, 17 January 2000 at 6pm with a performance by Douglas. Other performances are scheduled for 21 and 28 January, where words, art and poetry presentations shall merge into one.
