Discovery Thematic Residency: Curiosity and purpose are two signposts for
discovery and abstract play, located somewhere between investigation and
invention. Discovery is significant to art and science, suggesting a
modernist narrative of unfolding events as well as a non-linear
crisscrossing of borders. Indeed, scientific investigation and the creation
of art are inherently about discovery as they re-invent, realign and
transform disparate elements to create new territories or redefine old ones.
Like most residencies, Discovery is meant to cross the borders of art
production, focussing on the importance of ideas and themes in the work
rather than a specific media. We anticipate that many artists working with
ideas of post-colonialism, games design and data sets, biotechnology or
self-discovery, to name just a few, will be attracted to work with others
sharing similar approaches to the theme. We encourage artists involved in a
range of production to be involved including digital technology, ceramics,
photography, painting, printmaking, sculpture, etc. Art writers and curators
who are working on projects in and around the theme are also encouraged to
apply.
The thematic residency provides time, studios and facilities for research,
experimentation and production of artworks and ideas in media and visual
art. While residents spend most of their time on independent research and
production, interaction is enriched through presentations, group discussion
and less formal exchanges among a community of peers. Residents engage in
discussions about the selected theme. Residencies are open to critics,
curators and art historians as well as media and visual artists.
