Indepth Arts News: "Jugendstil in word and image" 2000-02-04 until 2000-05-07 Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam, , NL Netherlands
Interest in the so-called ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’, a total work of art synthesising the various artistic disciplines, manifested itself around 1900, in book illustration among others. Poetry was best suited to the union of text and image. Jugendstil in word and image includes approximately 80 illustrations by artists such as Peter Behrens, Josef Hoffmann, Max Klinger, Koloman Moser and Heinrich Vogeler.
In addition to the beautifully illustrated books and periodicals, there is a representative selection of applied art from the Mathildenhöhe (Museum Künstlerkolonie Darmstadt), including stylised objects by Joseph Maria Olbrich and Hans Christiansen.
