Dideh-Iranian Fine Art

With the Winter/Spring 2000 exhibition Dideh the full-service
Iranian-art gallery on the Internet expands on its first show of
contemporary fine art from Iran. Beginning on January 1, Gallery Dideh
has enlarged its current exhibition by including works by Koorosh
Shishehgaran, Nima Petgar and Farideh Lashai, three of the most
prominent Iranian masters working today.
Describing Shishehgaran s views as manifested in his works of art,
writer and poet Javad Mojabbi writes that he conceives the modern world
as being dynamic, complex, ever-changing and on the verge of explosion.
To express his mental picture of modern life, Shishehgaran uses lines
with energetic twists in a natural and playful rather than a deliberate
manner, characterized by a touch of appealing euphoria.
Nima Petgar, born in 1946 in Tehran, left for Italy in 1968 to study at
the Rome Art Academy, from which he graduated in 1973. His paintings are
directly influenced by the oeuvre of the Italian master Emilio Greco and
his mental master the Japanese philosopher Ukiyo-e. His works are
notable for their rich archaic language combined with Oriental
fragility. His series Big Portraits, which are a form of modern
portraiture, display unparalleled mastery. Iranian art historian Ali
Asghar Gharebaghi describes these as expressionless faces lying
somewhere between the living, breathing fleshiness of an animate
organism and the cold remoteness of a stone portrait bust.‰
Farideh Lashai, who studied decorative arts in Vienna, is one of the
most notable female Iranian artists of her generation. Although she now
lives in Tehran, she has been exhibiting her works in Europe and America
since 1967. With her many solo and group presentations abroad and at
home, she has become Iran‚s most active painter. The roots of her art
are in Iran, but the artistic traditions of both Eastern and Western
painting can be seen in her work a fact that surely contributes to its
success. Lashai s paintings exhibit a new and modern approach to nature,
combining a silent, gentle atmosphere with dynamic brushwork.
