"Mentals III"
2000-03-10 until 2000-04-23
Gold Coast City Art Gallery
Gold Coast, , AU Australia

Gold Coast City Art Gallery is proud to present a very exciting exhibition full of life and vitality. In the mid-1970s, 5 guys studying art at East Sydney Tech decided to form a band. Over 20 years later Mental As Anything are an Australian icon. Mentals III features work by all five members of the band, as well as a variety of photographs and memorabilia representing the last 20 years.

These eclectic and vibrant works, inspired by literally thousands of places and people encountered throughout the band's career, prove once and for all that Mental as Anything are not just great musicians but great artists in their own right.

Mentals III consists of new and older works by the band members, plus some posters, prints and photographs produced by friends and associates. They cover every categorical gradation from the picturesque to the lugubrious, the big to the small, and the elegantly subdued to the swaggeringly exuberant, explains Bird Twohill, from Mental as Anything.

Since 1976 we have released 10 albums, used about 50 kilometre so gaffer tape and played over 3000 shows. Travelling around Australia constantly has given us ample opportunity to contemplate the passing landscape and include aspects of it in our pictures.

The pictures in the show are new and old works from the band members plus some posters, prints and photographs by our friends and associates. They cover every categorical gradation from the picturesque to the lugubrious, the big to the small, an the elegantly subdued to the swaggeringly exuberant.

In recent years Mental as Anything has identified very strongly with youth culture in the regions. They have also strong affiliations with youth surfing culture through Reg Mombassa's designs for Mambo and Martin Murphy surfwear.

Mentals III is being toured by Wollongong City Gallery.

A range of merchandise is available for purchase from CDs, videos, t-shirts and limited edition prints.

IT'S BRIGHT BOLD AND FUNKY!
