"Olafur Eliasson : The Curious Garden"
2000-01-19 until 2000-04-31

The viewer's experience is central to Olafur Eliasson's work. His installations take their form from
nature and physics, often recreating natural phenomena in the gallery space. Although they echo
the experience of nature, their mechanical sources are evident to the viewer, making clear thier
relationship to technology.
In this, his first exhibition in Ireland, Eliasson takes advantage of the
spaces and courtyard at IMMA to present a series of interrelated installations , each creating a
different sensation for the viewer. In one room natural light will be replaced by yellow
monofrequency light, thereby disrupting the visual experience in the space. In another a hawthorn
hedge provides an unexpected encounter with nature. For this exhibition, Eliasson has created a
new 'Heat Pavillion' for the courtyard.
Olafur Eliasson, who has exhibited widely worldwide, was born in 1965 in Denmark, but grew up in
Iceland. He now lives and works in Berlin.
