A very unique, multimedia installation opens at the University of SA Art
Museum, on 6 April 2000, Songs, Lines, Words,Voices, Dance, and Art The University of South Australia Art Museum is hosting 25 Songs on 25 Lines of
Words on Art Statement for Seven Voices and Dance, an installation by Joe
Felber which boldly extends the boundaries of artistic collaboration in a
manner rarely seen in Adelaide.
Felber has created this extraordinary
multimedia experiential work - recently shown at the Art Gallery of NSW - in
collaboration with dancer/choreographer Lucy Guerin and composer Elliott Gyger.Suspended light pendulums and long polished stainless steel tubes, pipe Gyger's
musical composition for seven voices into the gallery - a visual and aural
environment in which the viewer can move about. Traversing the space is the
image of the dancer, Lucy Guerin, responding to the sounds, images and
lightscapes. Felber's graphics complete the installation, drawing the audience
back to Reinhardt's texts, which lie at the centre of this work. The starting point for 25 Songs is Ad Reinhardt's Black Paintings, the
undifferentiated monochromes from the 50s, alongside which Reinhardt made his
notorious statements about the definition of art. Felber, Gyger and Guerin
each respond in their own way to Reinhardt's work, pursuing similarities in
relation to various media; visual art, music and dance. Together, they build a
faceted, complex picture of the core themes in Reinhardt's work - 'negation',
'nothingness' and 'transcendence' - as they apply to all the arts.25
Songs involves Melbourne-based, Swiss artist Joe Felber, who conceived and
developed the installation whilst undertaking a residency in Adelaide, Lucy
Guerin, Adelaide born and a Centre for Performing Arts graduate who danced
Robbery Waitress on Bail in the recent Adelaide Festival, and Sydney composer
Elliott Gyger.
An impressive full-colour, bound catalogue, with CD designed by Adelaide based
Alexander Musson accompanies this internationally touring exhibition.
Joe Felber will be in Adelaide for the opening of 25 Songs on Thursday 6 April
from 5:30pm. The exhibition continues until 6 May and is open Tuesday to Friday
from 11:00 to 5:00pm and on Saturday from 2:00 to 5:00pm.
