"Rear View Mirror: Automobile Images and the American Identities "
2000-04-08 until 2000-08-13
California Museum of Photography
Riverside, CA, USA United States of America

In collaboration with the Automobile Club of Southern California, UCR/CMP presents an entertaining and thought-provoking look at the weaving of the automobile into the fabric of American culture. The Automobile and the Photograph traces the still image of the car in popular film, advertising, historic travel photography and fine art.

Through scholarly investigations and photographs, the exhibition considers the imaging of the car, machine beauty and modernism, the emergence of automobile identifies and the mythological lure of the American open road. From the freeway to the drive-in theater, The Automobile and the Photograph charts the construction of an automobile environment and reveals how mobile America civilized the wide open spaces while still maintaining a need and sense of individuality. The exhibition will be accompanied by an interactive web site. Here visitors will be encouraged to describe their own auto-identity. Online visitors will be able to submit electronic text and photographic files to tell their stories and display their photographs of people with their cars.
